Service Description
Museo dell’Opera del Duomo + plus Baptistery plus the Cathedral Come with us and let yourself be transported from the medieval era right into the XXI century in the New Museum of the Opera del Duomo. This is not just a museum: this is the story of an institution that witnessed more than 700 years of Florentine artistic excellence. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo houses the largest concentration of Florentine monumental sculpture in the world. ‘Opera del Duomo’ or OPA, in fact, means the Workshop of the Cathedral and, during the 2/3 hour tour you will walk not only through the history of the city, and through the history of art but you will, more importantly, be able to glimpse the souls of the artists that dedicated their talent and their most intimate feelings to the service of the city and its glory. Among other masterpieces, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo holds the original ‘Gates of Paradise’. Its 10 relief-panels are among the greatest works of Early Renaissance sculpture. We will also be able to admire Michelangelo’s penultimate sculpture, which bears witness to the artist’s personal faith: a Pietà meant to adorn the altar near which he was expected to be buried. Furthermore, we will see one of the Renaissance’s most emotionally intense statue: Donatello’s wooden Mary Magdalene which, to our benefit, has as its counterpart an altar front and a monumental cross both made of pure silver, with a combined weight of 250 kilograms in the metal parts alone. (The museum tour needs approx. one hour and a half tour minimum). * All hours needed are approximate and we can create a tour that will be timewise efficient to your needs but still satisfy your cultural curiosity. ** Museum tickets not included in the tour price. *** Once confirmed the museum tickets are 100% in penalty, no refundable, no changeable.
